‘Our favourite site!’
Just five minutes’ walk from the beach, Eddie Sleight, her husband Steve and Sasha the Labrador enjoy the dog-friendly John Fowler Holiday Park & Camping Site near Bude in Cornwall
If holidaying with the family means dog (or dogs) come too, this Widemouth Bay caravan and camping park is a great base. Set in 50 acres, off a quiet country road just four miles or so from the seaside town of Bude, the park’s part of the John Fowler chain, which has five further holiday parks in Cornwall, as well as three in Devon and two in Somerset.
Dogs are welcome across the park, which is campervan and motorhome friendly, and there are some fantastic walks straight from the campsite, as well as great sea views if you pick a camping spot high up the hill.
Leave the park, trot down a quiet country lane and take one of the first footpaths you see signposted and it will lead you straight to the beach. Though, as a word of warning, the path’s steep in places – so if you struggle to walk far, or like to avoid a climb, it’s best to load your dog into the car and head up to the much flatter and easier to access Bude beach further up the shore.
Dogs are welcome all year round on the southern section of Widemouth Bay beach (nearest the caravan park), but further up and closer to Bude town you’ll have to keep your dog away from the surf between Easter Sunday and the end of September. It’s also worth noting that the Atlantic coastline is rough and the cliffs very steep in places, so if, like ours, your dog likes to hair off and pay scant regard to their safety, keep them on a lead when it gets hairy.
We’ve been taking Sasha to this holiday park ever since she was a pup and she absolutely loves it. For the kids, there’s a heated indoor swimming pool on site, as well as a club house, bar, a small amusements arcade, a shop, free crazy golf and a play area. Small children will love the Foxy Club, with great entertainment every night during the high season to keep them busy while you chill out.
From coast to countryside, you’re right in the heart of some fantastic walking country when you holiday at Widemouth Bay, and for inspiration and information try the following sites:
